How often do I have to change them? What do I do with them if I’m away from home? What about traveling and camping? Will they shift out of place or ride up my underwear? Isn’t this a step back into the old days? Why so many colors and patterns?
Note that we respect your privacy and will never share or sell your email address...ever! The inner core of both the pad and the wrap around wing is filled with layers of cotton batting. It is a durable and fluffy material that allows air flow within the pad. This means that moisture has a better chance of moving sideways in the pad instead of straight to the bottom. You also get a lot of natural evaporation occur and less perspiration. After you try the product you’ll get to know how often you need to change them. Like any menstrual product, they do have their limits. I find I have less leaks with Goddess Moons than with disposables, which have the plastic backing that can direct the flow to run right off the side.
Again, you’ll figure this out after you try them, but generally you can wear them longer than a disposable pad because they stay cooler and drier than a disposable, and so they feel more comfortable. Lots of women change their disposable pads before they’ve really reached their capacity because they feel so hot, wet, and gross after such a short time! I used to use 3-4 disposable regular pads per day, and now use 1-2 Goddess Moon pads. I often wear the same wing all day and just change the pad if needed.
I recommend one of the STARTER KITS to begin with. That should give you enough to get through a cycle with only doing laundry once. I personally go through about 8 Goddess Moons, and 4 extra pads. I have a medium cycle, and I change the entire Goddess Moon (wrap and pad) each night and each morning. Check the Prices And Ordering page for a description of the available kits and specials.
Since Goddess Moons have no plastic or nylon they breathe, so much of the menstrual flow evaporates off while you’re wearing them, keeping them cooler and drier. Bacteria (which cause odour) thrive best in a warm, wet environment - like a DISPOSABLE pad! Hence the emergence of “deodorants” in the throw aways.
I carry a zip lock bag for carrying used Goddess Moons so that they don’t completely dry out before I get a chance to rinse them. If you get a chance to rinse them out before putting them in the bag, all the better. If they dry out, it’s not a big problem, you can always soak them when you get home, then wash as usual. Since they’re mostly bright colours, staining isn’t an issue. If you’re using the natural unbleached cotton, I’d be a bit more diligent about rinsing them soon after use.
Goddess Moons are perfect for traveling and camping because you don’t have to worry about running out where you can’t easily find disposables (like on a hiking trail or many developing countries), and you won’t leave a trail of garbage behind you wherever you go! You can hand was Goddess Moons in the sink of your hotel or in a river, stream, lake, ocean, etc. Hang them to dry or lay them out in the sun!
Once the wings are snapped together, the Goddess Moon pad will stay put, even when running or walking. The back of all the wings are textured flannel that won’t slip easily. Since your underwear widen at the front and back, and the wings fasten snugly around the crotch, it’s very difficult to move a Goddess Moon very far in either direction. One extra bonus about cloth pads is that since there’s no glue, so there’s no sticky part to shift around and grab you! (We all know what that’s like!)
In my family, the “old days” meant torn up old rags slung from front to back and pinned to your underwear. They were made of stained or ripped towels, sheets, you name it, whatever was damaged beyond repair and unusable for any other purpose. They were ugly, uncomfortable, impractical and undignified. Back in those days (sadly not so long ago), you had to keep them hidden, and wash them out by hand when the men were out of the house, and hope to God they dried on the line before anyone came home! Their only redeeming feature was their affordability. When disposable pads and tampons first became available to average and lower income families, who could resist, given the alternatives? Today, much has changed! Goddess Moons are made from soft new cotton flannel with a highly absorbent core. They come in beautiful rich colours and patterns that don’t stain like torn up old bed sheets, and they are a modern and practical design! You don’t have to hide them (most people haven’t a clue what they are anyway), and you can throw them in with your regular laundry - machine wash and dry. If menstruation wasn’t so shamed and tabooed in the past, I’m sure a more modern design would have emerged earlier. We’ve come a long way girlfriends!
When I set out to make my first set of menstrual pads for myself, I naturally picked out colours and designs that I liked. Since these patterns were of my own choosing, I found them to be fun and attractive. I was actually looking forward to using them! When this first happened, I realized a big change had taken place in the way I viewed my menstrual cycle. I used to view my cycle just as the
And THAT’S why Goddess Moons come in so many colours and patterns - so that each woman can pick out the designs that SHE finds attractive, fun, special, meaningful... so that she can LOOK FORWARD to using them, and shift her attitude towards her moon time FROM REPULSION TO REVERENCE!
